Oliver 1955 power steering cylinder problem

I had to replace the power steering cylinder on my 1955 a few years ago due to a brain cramp on my part. I got a used one from local parts supplier. I also replaced the pitman shaft & the center tie rod arm. In the last 2 years the cap on the cylinder has broken 3 times. I have not been able to find any problems with the unit. Any information and/or what I should look for would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

There should be a hole in the center of the cap that is tapped 1/8" pipe threads. There should be a fitting and a vent hose attached. The sealing rings on the cylinder piston do not seal up 100%, thus some leakage occurs filling the center section. This leakage is intentional for lubrication of the gears (a new cylinder should be filled)If this hole has a plug, the center section of the cylinder will eventually be exposed to 2250 PSI. It can't stand that much pressure on the area on the cap and it will break the ears off. If it is a early tractor with the belt driven cooler pump, the vent hose should go to a tee at the inlet to the cooler pump, if later tractor, the hose tees into the line exiting the cooler.

B.A I have a new cap from White tractor with the pipe fitting & hose . My only question is why did this tractor work from 1971 until 1999 without a drain hose . Is it possible that the old cylinder did not have as much leakage by the cylinder packings ?
