Need Help On 770 Front End Rebuild

We are trying to replace the bearings in the narrow front (dual wheel, row crop) of an Oliver 770. We have it off of the tractor and have removed the top nut and locking washer. No reasonable (and some unreasonable) amount of force will push the shaft and bearing out the bottom. Have we missed a step in the process or is it just that more force is required? Thanks for your help. Fred

If I am visuallizing this right I agree you need to take the nut, washer off the top, but I think there could be a snap ring or lock of some kind on the bottom end. Most of these have two tapered roller bearings on the vertical shaft. The weight of the tractor rest on the top bearing while the lower bearing guides the bottom of the shaft along. The shaft the wheels run on could come off the vertical shaft and the vertical shaft have to be removed from the top side. This is doubtful since it is counterproductive to supporting the tractor. The gear on the upper must come off at sometime or another. Is it off yet?

Hi Olie,

As yet, I don't have that top gear off the shaft.
We've got about every puller you can imagine but we can't any one of them under the gear to pull it. I thought if I could push the shaft out the bottom of the housing, the gear would come off too. I am going to work on it again this weekend and I'll look for a snap ring at the bottom
as you suggested. Thanks.
