Need Opinions on a 1650 deisel

I am going to look at a 1650 deisel sometime soon and since I don't know much about this make/ model I am hoping some of you may be able to give your opinion of them as an overall tractor. I will want to put a loader on it and plan to use it for haying and loading manure. Somebody gave me the impression that they were (Olivers in general) a little weak in the hydraulics department. Is that true? Also I would like to get an idea of any weak links I should look for when I go to see it. Any idea what it would cost to put a loader on it (used) and what makes and models would fit it? Thanks in advance for any info

Pete the 16 series as i call it was and still is a very popular tractor in my area. I have been around olivers all my life and worked at a oliver-white dealer for 20+years.I have seen neg.coments about the hyd and the waukesha motor.I have never been afraid of the waukesha motor. Ive been around and inside a lot of them. Most of problems i have seen is 1 lack of maintenance 2 the hands inside from before. Im not saying that im the only one that knows how to overhaul a motor but in 3000hrs water shouldnt be in the oil pan. As far as the hyds some people have more problems than others. I have a lot of tractors(costomers) out there and and we don't have alot of problems with hyds. Personally i would buy a 1655D reg widefrount. 1555&1655 are my personal favorites The 55series are a sweet looking tractor when restored. I have a 1974 1655D 5754hrs origional hrs with a oliver 1610 loader. I love it!

Thanks for all the input. I went to look at the tractor and it looks and runs great. New tires and paint, everything seems to work, which made me a little suspicious that the $3500 I had heard through the grapevine couldn"t possibly be right. Sure enough, the owner called this morning and told me $6400, which is way out of my price range. If anyone is interested they can email me and I will give you his number. The tractor is in NE PA. I am a farm labourer and currently work for a fellow that has a 1650-this tractor has around 7000 hours on it and was used mainly for row-crop work in its day but is now used as a yard tractor for mowing grass and running grain augers, blades, etc. Hydraulics are very good as is the overall tractor except for the engine (Waukesha).The engine was overhauled around 4000 hours and now at 7000 we are getting antifreeze in the oil so I guess here we go again. We have been looking at changing over to a Perkins engine with a few modifications.good luck

A friend has a 1650 diesel that is a good tractor although his does not have a loader and he replaced the hydraulic pump shortly after buying the tractor . Mr BA Star who is often on this web site sent me a diagram which showed how to plumb the hydraulics on a 1555 (which I believe the power beyond arrangement is the same ) so you have power beyond to the loader . Power beyond allows the remotes on the tractor to still operate but requires a joy stick /.single valve on the loader that operates the bucket up or down and dump from one valve. On my 1555 I ultimately put a pump on he pto shaft to run the loader which I have been very pleased with .

Pete, I have a 1969 Oliver 1650 gas with the over/under, set back front axle and a Oliver 1610 loader. It is a great loader tractor, very handy with gobs of power.It will push over 10 inch popular trees like they don't exist. I use mine mostly to move skeletons around my tractor parts yard. It will easly pick up a 70 frame and rear end or a 60 with the engine still in. It will pick the back hoe off my 77 industrial with no problem. I don't consider the hyraulics week by any means. Some say the 1650 is the best overall Oliver ever. It's a good mid-sized tractor. Earlier 1650 diesels were indirect injection 283 cubic inch Waukesha engines rated about 66 horsepower on the PTO, usually with 2-speed auxilliary Hydra-Power Drive giving total of 12 forward and 4 reverse speeds. Later ones, I'm not sure of the serial number break, but the year would be about 1968 or 69 had a different cylinder head with direct injection, and 3-speed Over/Under Hydraul Shift giving 18 forward and 6 reverse speeds. These were virtually the same tractor as the later 1655 diesel rated @ 70 hp on the PTO. I have experience with the later model, and a friend still has one of the earlier models still going. Outside of the over/under, don't know much advantage either way. The diesels don't start too well when it's cold unless you plug 'em in or use either, which some don't like to do.
The hydraulics are fine except I would add a control valve specifically for a loader and plumb it to one of the remotes. This will allow better control of the loader.
The White/Oliver loaders meant for this tractor are not 'quick attach'. They are not difficult to put on if you leave the sub-frame on the tractor. If you want to take it off occasionally, a newer model loader might be the way to go, although will also likely be more $$. This is still a popular tractor and if it has been treated reasonably well and is in good shape should last a long time. There's one opinion for you. Good luck. dwm

I Have Had A Late Model 1650 With The Direct Injection And The Two Speed Over/Under For 16 Yrs. And Have Had Very Good Luck With It. I Do Not Have A Loader On Mine. Really Don't Know Why The Hydraulics Wouldn't Hold Up.I Will Agree That The 1650/1655 Is Probably The Best Tractor That Oliver Built. A Very Handy Unit.
