Anyone else??? Im mowing hay with my 1850, love it. Pull the pto lever back to stop the mower and get a drink-- POP the lever comes back foward and the mower starts. GRRRRR go back and adjust the pto break, run for another hour, get ready to go home, pull out on the road and POP the lever jumps again and the mower starts. I really hate that design with the little hook on the pto lever, it never stays. That was not one of Olivers better ideas. Same way with the 1655 and the 2150, I constantly fight the PTO lever jumping out. Anyone got any ideas on how to modify that lever or the hook so that it actually holds. I thought about taking the lever off and grinding the pin flat on one side and the hook more flat so that it would have more surface to hold onto. I guess if you adjust the break every hour or two it holds better but there has to be a better way then holding it with a bungie cord. Any ideas on better ways to hold that lever back????

i have a 1750 oliver and i bought a .25 rubber tarp strap when my dad bought the tractor and hooked it to the fender when we turned off the pto.

Called the Agco dealer and low and behold they sell that little hook new, so I got him to order one for me. Im going to get one for $13 and put it on and see if that solves the problem or not. He also said that pin will drive out and I can put a roll pin in there that is harder steel that the origional and it will last better. I should have all the parts by the weekend so I will tear it down and see if that helps, It cant hurt. I will keep ya all posted.

Like Tim, I have the opposite problem. I had to adjust the brake tight to keep the Pto from turning all the time. It takes almost two hands to release the latch. Like the rest have said it sounds like the spring or the latch is worn.

Of course, it may be the early stages of C.R.S. (Cummins Rejection Syndrome). I've heard that is one of the symtoms. :) Just kidding!

The brakes on mine give me more fits than anything. Myron KY

i have worked on olivers all my life. the latch isounds like it is worn out. you need to build up the very tip of the latchso it will hook . but dont build it up too much.

After looking at your comments and looking at my hook again I think your right. There is a shiny groove in the pin where the hook is supposed to catch and it is not and the hook appears to have considerable wear out on the tip. Could be it has just been hooked and unhooked too many times. The 1655 does this some but not as bad as the 1850, and I looked at it again too. It also has a shiny part right where the hook goes on the pin but the hook looks a lot better. Maybe I do just need to build that hook up and the pin too. My brake adjustment is almost all the way in and the pto break is almost new so there has to be wear somewhere. I am gonna take it apart this week and see what I can do. Thanks for the help guys, at least I know it is something wrong with my two tractors and not the design.

TL is correct. I took my mig out and built up a little more face, shaped it with my dremel tool and put all of my running 50 series back to "factory tolerances". Fixed my 770 pretty much the same way. Of course the bungy cord trick worked pretty well for the previous 15 years too.

We havent had problems with our 1650. We always seem to have that darn PTO brake not set right, cause it spins with nothing attached to it, but if you force the handle back some, it quits it from moving. Maybe like Larry said, it could be your spring, but if all yours are doing it(poping out of place), then you need to make some adjustments, but what, I dont know. Maybe your idea grinding the top flat would help. Keep us updated on your findings Shep!

I don't have that problem with mine and I have 7 50 series tractors.Is the spring still good under the button?

My 1850 used to be that way when I first got it but it has slowly got to the point that it will not even catch and hold back anymore. Wonder if I have worn the hook out.....
