Has anyone ever converted a two wheel drive 1850 to a 4wheel drive. If so how big of a job is it. Help is always appreciated.

If you only need front wheel assist for intermittent periods like loader work or powering through soft spots you could modify a rear power assist axel from a combine and run it off a secondary hydraulic pump. You could run an additional hydrualic pump from the secondary drive that is located just above the PTO. I have seen a Case tractor with this type of set-up. It sounds a little like a frankenstein type set-up but the tractor was being used daily and saved the guy thousands of dollars vs. buying a different tractor. It seems to me the 1850 had a hydraulic front assist option anyways so you might be able to find all the parts you need from a wrecker.

I dont think you can turn a two wheel drive tractorinto a MFWA tractor without having the correct transmission that will accept the transfer case. The transfer case bolts on to the bottom of the transmission and is powered through a gear at the bottom. The only way to do it would be to somehow modify the transmission to accept the transfer case and put the correct gears into it. Your best bet would be to find a tractor that had or has a MFWA and fix it up. Just my thoughts.

Shep is correct,you would be better off to find a MFW tractor. The housings are he same, however, you will need the longer pinion shaft that extends out the front of the housing for the primary drive gear in the transfer case. That means a complete teardown and reassembly of the transmission and final drive.
