I am fairly new to tractors and need some further information and opinions please. I currently have a farmall super a with a woods belly mower but am considering moving to something with 3pt hitch. I know someone who has a 540, but have not looked at it yet. From everything that i read the 540 can be a good tractor. My question is how would it compare to something like an 8n also does it have one brake pedel or two? I basicly want the machine for work around the place and grass mowing. any and all feedback is appreciated. thanks

If yer talkin about a Cockshutt 540, then it's got individual brake pedals, alright--where they belong! Immediate better features than 8N:
Independent PTO
Independent hydraulics, leading to...
Independent 3PTH control
more horsepower
more hydraulic power
more weight
larger tires
6 speeds forward/2 reverse VS. 4 speeds forward/1 reverse
a frame for proper mounting of a loader
stronger front axle
much quieter fan
need I go on???

I don't know anything about 540s but I can tell you that the super 55 oliver is about the best tractor in it's class and the 550 oliver is the only improvement ever made on the super 55. It's just one man"s opinion. Good luck..
