I posted a while back asking if this steering box was adjustable,no replies. The steering bound up a couple of days ago(it's had a rough spot since I bought the tractor)so I tore it apart,I hope what I found will help outhers. The box is adjustable. The endcap that holds the wormgear in place has a shim pack that can be reduced to take up endplay. On the bottom side of the gear box there is 2, 9/16 bolts that hold a wear block. It also has a shimpack.Removing shims here will mesh the gears closer together. The teeth that mesh the worm are actually pins,I am going to see if replacements are avaliable.hope this helps someone.

What many guys do that have wear on the pins is
to move the middle pins, which get the most wear,
and shift them to the outer locations. I don't
know if replacement pins are available, but by
moving them you can take up some play.

I agree, the 2 outer pins have next to no wear, the middle 2 are worn to one side, will most likely turn them 180 and swap with the end ones as you stated.

I helped a friend do exactly this on his "30" just two weeks ago. We swapped the outer pins with the center pins and turned the worn pins 90 degrees. Another problem we encountered was wear at the seal surface on the input shaft. In addition to replacing the original seal, we picked up another seal with the correct ID, ground the OD for a tight fit inside the hollow portion of the bearing retainer and sealed it with silicone. If we had a lathe, we could have done a real professional job and turned the inside of the retainer to fit the new seal; but what we did works very well. Adjustments to the worm gear bearings and the pinion must be made while the box is out of the tractor. In addition to the work on the steering box, we replaced the mediocre lower U-joint with a more modern greasable type. The results were definitely worth the effort; it truly drives like a new tractor. I think the main reason the pins wear is lack of lube. His seals don't leak at all now but it's still a good idea to keep a check on the gear oil level just in case.
