Hitting all discussion boards to get an answer; ops manual says improperly connecting battery cables in a 6V positive ground system will result in damage. Will appreciate a definition and explanation of "damage", how serious it is to correct, etc.
System is on an OC3 dozer. Thanks PC

I'll try to give you a start. The worst thing is that you can damage the regulator, and less likely the generator.
When you connect the ground to negative you can, and probably will reverse polarize the regulator and possibly the generator.
There is a polarization procedure that must be followed when installing a new regulator or generator, and that same procedure should be used if you have reversed the cables. Rather than trying to go through the entire procedure here--which varies depending on the specifics of your system, go to:>Link

Thanks for the link. It looks like it covers polarization pretty well. It will come in handy as I am installing a new generator in my JD420C this weekend, and the polarity on that has been mixed up my the previous owner.
