88 puller project

I posted a similar message in the tractor pulling forum but thought I had better ask to experts here on the Oliver forum; I am not an Oliver guy but I just brought home a 1951 88 and am interested in building a Div II puller. I am not interested in stroking the crank and will most likely go with a 3 7/8" piston kit, unless bigger is available. What intake/exhaust manifolds should I run? Should I install a 1800 gas cam? Carb? Thanks in advance for any ideas. Would like to reach the 65-70 HP range. Is this reachable without a long arm?

80 hp is easily achieved with 3 7/8 pistons. An 1800 cam won't fit in an 88 block. An 1800 is a totally diff. animal. You need a 1600 or 1650 gas cam, manifolds, head and carb. The combustion chambers in a 1650 head are half the size of an 88. The manifolds are the biggest factory ones you can get. You would be better off it you gould get your hands on a complete 1850 gas motor. It is areound 100hp and it will bolt right in.

So... sounds like 3 7/8" x 4", 1650 intake/exhaust & cam. Bigger carb, more spark, clean up the head and shave as much as possible, I should be setting somewhere around 75-80 HP? Sounds like a plan. Thanks for the info.
