1958 770 gas RC Std. PTO
After the ball type bearing wore out, I replaced it with one I purchased from Bearings Inc. The old bearing had one sealed side facing the final drive, and one open side toward the PTO unit drive shaft gear. The replacement was sealed on both sides and was detroyed promptly after engagement. The seal makes contact with the gear. It may seam obvious, but is the bearing supposed to have the open side or am I missing something here? Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hi Mark--
That bearing is only supposed to have one seal. That allows oil to be splashed into it by the movement of the gears and the seal on the front side keeps the oil out of the rear axle compartment. You can replace it again with the same bearing you tried before, but carefully pry the seal out of the PTO side before installation.
Also check the new bearing to make sure it has as many ball bearings as the original. I have found that many of the "bearing house" bearings will fit but they are less expensive than OEM because they are lighter duty, so you might ask for a better one if they can get it.
