Oliver 77 discharging battery

I'm really a IH owner, but friend of mine has a 77 that has gone through 3 NEW BATTERIES in the last 2 weeks. With new battery it starts and runs fine, indicates its charging. But, it sits for two or three days, and battery is stone dead!! What could cause this...a dead short..where should we look?? His 77 is a great machine by the way...very nice...Thanks Oliver Guys ...Cmore

A short can be detected by removing one of the battery cables and use a volt meter in series, if voltage is detected disconnect one wire at a time at the regulator till the problem is found. An alternator the main terminal is connected to the red pigtail wire, the white wire from the pigtail activates the alternator and if connected to 12V+ will discharge the battery when the engine is off. This wire should be hooked up to the ignition switch. Without more info on his system + or - ground and alt or generator we are all guessing so give us more info.

The 77 in question is a 6 volt positive ground. When you open the voltage regulator, the large set of points are open, and the small set of points are closed...what should we look for?? Cmore

Another common thing wich drains a lot of batteries is: Quite often people switch from 6V over to 12V , and have something drawing off the battery after shutting the tractor off. After you shut off the tractor , check all wires with tester to see if any one of them have juice flowing through them. If so , you need to change that wire connection to a different place.

First of all does he have a generator or a alternator? If he has a generator more than likely the points are stuck inside the regulator and the never open back up, hence causing a open circut for the battery to drain. If it has a alternator more than likely one of the fields has gone bad or the regulator inside is bad. Both are easy fixes, but unless you are comfortable taking a alternator apart I would take it in to a shop. A regulator for the generator is very easy to access and can probably be fixed. Its a 6 volt positive ground system with generator. When engine is not running, the large points on regulator are open and the small points are closed...this is the 3d battery the 77 has ruined. They're completely dead and wont recharge!! Cmore
