A couple of months ago some one was talking about a repower of a 1650. My own 1650 is down to starting only with ether assist and is almost on its last leg. How is the repower going? Will the small cummins engine (3.9L)fit?

The older 3.4 Onan/cummins is a 6 cylinder and it fits rather nicely in an 880 tub. I have posted earlier about these motors. I still have 3 at 1500 each.

Where are your engines located? I am working in West Texas and Colorado and will be travelling to Pennsylvania in a month or two. Are you anywhere close?

These motors came from a ups application they are the precurser for the 5.9 and 8.3 cummins. The motor makes about 160hp turboed take the charger off and a little less fuel and still have a 100 horses. I live in Tn check the e-mail address. We have a dairy and I am in and out if u mail me I will return your contact"asap". Hope this helps George Steadman

Did some research on that engine you have George, That was origionally an Onan engine that when Cummins bought out Onan, they just put their name plate on it and continued to sell it, so it is actually an Onan engine with a Cummins name on it I think. They used it for a med-duty engine before they had the 5.9L Cummins.

Also from what I am learning about it, they had a real high RPM band and created most of their Hp out of the RPM that they could turn and not their tork, says here thet the top end on that engine is 3800 RPM's to make 160HP. Thats why dropping the turbo off of the engine makes it drop a whole 60hp. Most of the applications it appears were automotive, for streight trucks and such but I think there were a few industrial applications for them. Seems these are older engines, before the 5.9L was ever even thought about, thats why I didn't figure out what it was.

Does this sound about like what you have George??? How hard is it to get parts for that old of an engine?? you had any problems with that??

Sounds like an interesting unit and I imagine it will work ok for a repower, but I think I will stick with the newer 5.9L engines.

Shep, thats the motor parts are still available. No trouble on the 880 so far, I have a lot of fun with a little motor and big power. The rpm's on the farm tractor are about 2150 makes 125 had to drop that for farm use. Makes a kick butt motor in a 77 puller. Depends on how much money u want to spend on the conversion, 1500 or I have no idea, but I am positive that u have that covered. Best of luck, George

Never seen a 3.4L Cummins with 6 cylinders before. Send me some more info on those engines you have George, I havent bought an engine for my 1655 repower yet and I would like to look into this engine some more.

Hey Dave, It was probably me, I am doing a 1655 Cummins engine repower right now, or as I get time in between everything else. I have looked at several 1650's and 1655's and I am opting to go with a 5.9L cummins with a small turbo turning about 110 flywheel Hp to power the tractor. I have run into a few unique things on this repower that I didnt find in the 1850 and 1855 that I did last year but nothing I couldnt overcome yet :-)

I saw a 3.9L cummins in a 1650 but I wasnt impressed. It was also about 110 flywheel HP but the nose was really light even with weights, like everytime you let off the clutch you thought the front was lifting. The balence was really off in that tractor and I think the engine had something to do with it. I think that tractor is now for sale to tell you the truth. Also the 3.9L is a whole lot shorter and you have to put an electric fan in or move the radiatior. This one had a moved radiator and I was not impressed. So I opted to stay with a 5.9L, plus im running 3 Oliver/Cummins tractors now with the 5.9 in them so servicing them will be easier if they were all the same.

All I will tell you dave is that it can be done (cause Im doing it now) and it "should" make a real nice tractor when im done. I have been taking some pictures as im doing this repower but have been lazy and havnt got them on my website yet.

Let me know if you have questions I will try to help.

Thanks for the reply. I have made a few calls to some freinds in the diesil engine business who will start looking for a suitable 5.9L engine. I have checked into a rebuild for the Wakesha and can get it done for around $4500 so I will probably let my check book decide on which way to go. I also bought an 1850 with the engine already out as a parts tractor. It would probably make better sence for me to scrap the 1650 and put the Cummins in the 1850 frame. I am just having trouble letting the 1650 go after 15 years.

I know what you mean about letting it go, but the 1850 will be a whole lot easier to convert to a repower. I bought a used Cummins 5.9 that had about 2000 hrs on it and tested out well for $4,500 and the conversion will be about another $1,000 so it is not much difference between a repower and a rebuild and there is a BIG difference in the results. The new engines go around $6,000 right now but I have only put one new engine in a tractor, using mostly rebuilds and used engines and they are working fine.

Good Luck

I think that was Shep. I know he found a 1655 in the weeds and was talking about repower. I havn't seen him post about it here or on his site lately.

Yeah, I have been workin on it, I have just been real busy makin hay and working on equipment in the shop here the last few weeks and havent had time to post any of my pictures. The 1655 has gotten stripped all the way down and repainted. I put some new seals in the back end and had to bend a front wheel a little where the previous owner bent it up. The three speed got rebuilt and I am now working on the bell housing, it has to be turned upside down to work with a 1655 clutch, the linkage goes the other way, who woulda thought???? so I working on fixing that problem.

I put the canopy on and am ready to mount the fenders up and do some electrical work on the lights and dash. I think I have found the engine that I want to put into it but I have a guy checking the engine out now to see if it is any good sence it has a few hrs on it now. So Im hoping to get the engine in her in the next month or so if corn choppin doesnt get in the way.

As soon as I get some time I will update my site and put some pictures on.

You just beat me to it Myron..... ...

Yeah, we have been running hard all week. Soon as I get off work in the evenings we have been mowing, baling and wrapping hay till 11pm or midnight. Been across 50 acres of millit and trudan this week. Didnt bale last night as the baling got ahead of the mowing so we fixed the machines we had broken this week. Been a long week already, so Im takin the wife out on a date sat night and we are shuttin down a day on sunday. You can work hard but you gotta play hard too.. :-) One of these days I will update my site, I got a lot of cool pictures of the 1655 gettin fixed up and the hay baler and wrapper running this week. Should be on the site soon.
