Hello, I posted this same question in the implement forum , but I wanted to get the scoop from my Green brothers! How much horsepower does it take to pull a 720 Oliver baler in thick Missouri Fescue? I have enough horses with my 1850 Ollie , but my dad lives about 5 miles away and if I baled over there it would be nice to leave my tractor at home and bale with his . However I don't think his will be able to do it. He has a D14 Allis and I'm guessing it to be about 35 HP. I don't know if that will be enough. What do you think?

We use a 550 Oliver on a 224 Massey baler and put 100 bales on a load with no problems.Works better than a bigger tractor, easier getting on and off plus it seems to be alot more moble in the field. Harold

you have used a mf 224 baler, what do yoiu think about it. there is one for sale at 1,000. looks to be in great condition. what do you think. i have never used a baler. would you consider it user friendly. what are some of the problems you have had.

Should be fine. I baled with a Oliver Super 55 (similar horsepower to D14) and John Deere 24T baler without any problem.

Should work OK, but will be slower. I baled in my youth with a D-14, and don't recall being short of power- the Power Director is really handy, too, when you get to a heavy spot. One drawback to using too much power to bale is that you're tempted to "cob it to it", with the result being more frequent baler breakage.

It will do just fine. We baled for years with a New Holland, I have no idea the model but it was huge, on PA hills behind a Farmall H.
Don't forget you have gears ;)

I also think it will be fine. We baled with a 550 Oliver for years on steep Pa hills with 720's and 620's.

Have baled with D 15 & 346 JD baler more than once, worked real well. Just this week used same baler with M farmall sure missed the hand clutch though. Have also used a 830 & 730 case power a matic with one worked well. D14 should be just fine.Have also run 7040 & 7050 Allis & 4440 JD on JD balers just keep the RPMs and power down or you can tear something up in a hurry. Jim Snow.
