Learned something today.Friend bought a farm and the farm came with a oliver tractor,knowing i liked oliver and knew a little about them he asked me to come look at it.He said the power steering didnt work and it only had two foward gears.I looked at it told him it was a 1950 with a detroit 453.Had new paint and 7000 in bills on the new motor told him the repair shop must of seen the old owner comming to get a bill that hi,but anyway it also had the three point hitch housing broke off,tractor had a rough life so i told him the old owner probly ran the tractors rearend out of oil,and that is why it only has two gears ahead,but i would bring a book over and tear it down.Than he mentioned he has a irrigation pump that only works on that tractor,and that is when it dawned on me what the problem was.Do the rest of the experts on here know what the problem was,ill give you a hint it has to do with a idler gear on the wrong side.

only two forward gears might mean someone installed the diferential ring gear on the wrong side of the bevel pinion.Did he have 6 gears in reverse??? If so that is the answer.

He had it running backwards???? What part of the 3 pt housing was broke off??

The three point arm housings on the tractor frame were broke off and bubblegummed back on.The 453 can run clockwise or counterclockwise depends what side the idler gear is installed,this poor tractor had the idlergear installed on the wrong side causing the engine to turn the wrong way,which turned the hydraulic pump/steering,and trans back words.Going to switch the idler around expecting to find all the pumps shot from running in reverse.Just wanted to give the rest of you something to look out for incase you have a motor rebuilt and the engine builder is asleep at the wheel.

Tom; I wondered why you titled the thread"FOOL", now I understand.Any mechanic who somehow manages to start(starter only turns one way) a newly overhauled engine and dosent check oil pressure first thing(dosent have any if turning backward) then runs it long enough to find only reverse gears run forward and still no oil pressure has certainly earned the title"FOOL". Sorry if it ran more than a few minutes the new bearings and crankshaft are junk. All you have is a set of new sleeves and pistons and a $7000 bill.Have him shot!!! Dave

Dave tractor has run now for over 1500 hours they just pull it around as a portable motor.The detroit will run anyway you set it up,i was calling myself a fool for not checking the rotation in the first place,oh well.It is always fun when you inhert projects.
