Oliver 60 engine

i think i know the answer to this, but what does
4-160 mean??

i assume 4 cylinders and 160 cu in of engine
displacement.

to me, this sounds like an awfully big engine
19 HP of output. why doesn't this engine generate
more horsepower than that??

No, the 160 doesn't mean 160 cid. The 4-160 is just a model number. Alot of the aftermarket manufacturers sometimes list the engine as just a Waukesha 160 instead of 4-160 because the "4" does mean four cylinder. In case you would like to know, the Oliver 60 had a 121 cid. engine

even at 121 cid, i still find it somewhat difficult to believe

It's just like all the other tractors of that size; low compression ratio, and the engine only runs at 1650rpm. It does rank about the same as Farmall, Allis Chalmers, and Deere, which average about 18.5 to 19 hp. I've built Farmall 113 cid motors to produce about 60 hp with slight bore increase and moderate head work. I'm attempting to build the motor on my 60. Not sure of what the outcome will be.
