770 Power Steering

I have a 770 with power steering problems. It has the late style hydrolic steering. It will either not turn or do funny things if you know what I mean. I'am thinking the problem is in the cylinder. Anybody have any other thoughts.

Your problems can be from many different things. First check the obvious like tight belts and hoses, and making sure that the fluid is topped off. Also look for signs of leaks for a clue to the problem. Failing that, it is possible that either the cups are worn in the hydraulic cylinders (easy and cheap to fix) or that there is wear in the steering valve that is connected to the steering wheel(hard and expensive to fix). To check the cylinders, disconnect one end and with the engine off, and the steering wheel straight ahead, try to stroke them in and out. If they give easily, then you found the problem (unless the steering valve is also shot). There is no way that I know to check the steering valve other than to pull it apart and check the tolerances which are meant to be very close. It could also be something simple inside like a bad o-ring or centering spring. If you go this far, make sure that you work in a very clean area as dirt will destroy your parts. I might have the original Oliver factory manual that covers your steering system. I'll check it and let you know.
