88 Shifting Problem

Have noticed the following problem when trying to shift my 88:

- If transmission is shifted into neutral at any point while engine is running and clutch is released, the gears grind when I go to shift back into a gear (clutch in, of course), both high and low range. A "ticking" sound can also be heard coming from the tranny in these situations while in neutral.

- If tractor is started while in gear (clutch in), it will shift well between all gears, both high and low range. Will only have problem if I put it in neutral.

Any thoughts? If I've been too confusing in the description I can clarify. Thanks for your help.

I'd think maybe a dragging clutch or pilot bearing.
