I seem to also have new problems with my starter. It sometimes just clicks and does nothing, then it sometimes starts to turn and then stops and clicks, sometimes it works. If I bump it enough times it usually works. When it does work it sounds/spins normal. It also does the same thing when I short directly across the terminals, no loose connections that I can find. What do I need to check?

I took checked for voltage, then took off the plastic cap. The contact on the battery post was completely worn off. Thanks for all the help.

Haven't had time to look at the thing yet. Forgive me for not being up on my terms, but while the key is turned to the start position, the "gear" in the starter sounds like it has moved to the correct starting position, just not turning. That is the noise I hear, it moving back and forth. I know there is a good connection between the starter and batteries.

A quick test is to take a test light and hook the clip on it to a good ground' then hold the prong on the starter post which has the bat cable on it,try to start and light should stay on If it goes out you have a bad connection between starter and battery. If it stays on bright try touching it to the post thats on the bottom of the solnoid which goes into the starter. If it goes out the solnoid is bad. If it stays on there is starter problems.

Take the plastic cap off the solenoid and turn your contacts over if this doesn't fix the problem more than likely the brushes are worn out and the armature needs turned. Good Luck.
