Help! Never owned a Oliver 70 Row Crop befor?

Going to look at one to buy tomorrow and it is around a mid 40s one not sure. It is complete and the guy wants 750.00 for it. He is 82 and owned it since new and is to old to use it anymore. Is this a Collectable one? This wasn't a add for sale he seen that I was looking for a old tractor and just called me. Any pointers that would help. What things are important to look for. It has the belt pulley set up, lights and hi/low range (is this like the Sherman?) Help me if you can. This most likely will be sold again. Thanks, Mark H.

Mark, I bought one a few years ago and paid somewhat more for just a "working" tractor. If it has the engine side shields, that would be a plus as they are slightly scarce and like all tinwork, pricey. The 70 will not have hydraulics, so this will limit it's usefullness unless you add a hyd. unit to the PTO (but then you can't use the PTO until you remove the hyd.). I guess what it boils down to is the 70 replaced the horses for drawbar work. On the UP side, there were TONS of them produced so parts are not too tough to find. New parts seem to be nearly double the price compared to the Fleetline tractors. The tranny will have 6 forward gears and only 1 reverse if it came out on rubber. 4 forward and 1 reverse for the steel wheels. The engine does have a water pump but no thermostat, just a canvas curtin in front of the radiator. If you look at it and have any more questions, just shoot me an e-mail. Good luck. Jim T
