Depends what you are willing to spend. Some very cost-effective improvements are:

carburetor upgrade. A 1600/1650 gas carb works very well.

More compression. Shaving the head to gain compression boosts hp considerably on a stock 77. You can shave about .060-.070" off the head and still burn pump gasoline. Any more than that and you'll gain more hp, but be forced to burn high octane (100+ rating) to prevent preignition of the fuel. This doesn't cost much (under $100).

Bigger pistons helps a lot but is quite a bit more expensive. You can get 3 3/4" sleeves and pistons for the 77.

More rpms the better.

Bigger valves. This is also a bit on the more costly side as far as mods go, but complements the larger pistons nicely and makes the motor breathe easier.

Of course, this just scratches the surface as there are stroker crankshafts and camshaft modifications that can be done as well if you are going to pull in open classes. These too get costly. I hope the above gives you a place to start without dumping a whole pile of money into it. Good luck!
