Have you removed the grounding wire from the mag? if not, try this as the stop switch may be shorting to earth. Regards, RAB

BTW when you get her going, check the oil feed to the valve gear (check tappet clearances and check that oil is where it's needed), and also that the governor is getting a good oil supply (oil splash on opening the filler while running), as the oil feed pipes can get blocked leading to expensive failures. The governor bearings are cheap to replace (check for any free play on the mag drive dog) and are a potential expensive trouble spot - if the flyball weights come adrift, bye bye governor housing!!

Mag points are probably the cause of sparks shortage. Just a clean and polish up job required, normally. if you need to remove the mag, scribe a line across the flanges before removal so as to be able to replace it accurately. If re-timing is required - by altering points gap or such like, set mag to trip just after top dead centre to get it started and then align flywheel mark (through inspection hole) with a timing light from #1 plug lead at 1200 rpm
The KD's have a manifold with variable heat control. This should be in the 'cold' position for running on gas. The only real problem if it's on the hot setting might be a little loss of power due to not getting as much air/fuel charge into the cylinders. The KD's have a lower compression ratio to enable them to run on the low octane fuel without pre-igniting.
1939 year production. Will have the low top gear - about 4-5 miles per hour or so, as that was fast enough on spade lugs! The tranny type was designated in the serial number as a 'C' suffix, if other than standard.
Hope this helps, e-mail me if more info required, regards, RAB
