Oliver alternator wiring

Hi, I'm trying to wire an alternator on a '52 Oliver 88 Row Crop. The alternator is a Delco Remy with a built in regulator. I put the wire from the amp meter onto the stud of the alt., green wire from switch to terminal #1, and terminal #2 back to alt. stud. A diode between #1 and switch. It won't give the coil spark. The two wires coming from the dash seem to have to be connected in order for the tractor to fire. But when I hook the alt. up like previously mentioned, it won't go. Any ideas? Appreciate the help, Jeff.

You don't need an extra diode in the #1 wire.I guess you have changed polarity to negitive ground,so the connections on the ammeter need to be reversed along with the wires on the coil.

Larry, do you mean the wires for the ammeter and coil have to be reversed when it IS negative ground for the alt. to work? I did leave out the part that it is wired negative ground already. Thanks, Jeff.
