Oliver 1550 questions

I recently got an Oliver 1550 at an auction. I'm very happy with it, but I have two questions:

1. The pto shaft does not completely stop. When I pull the lever to turn it off, it slows down, but doesn't completely stop. Is this common, and is it difficult and expensive to fix?

2. When I'm going down a hill, and I put it in low gear, it feels like I'm freewheeling. I also have a Ferguson TO-20, and when I go down a hill, I put it in low gear, and the engine slows it down. This doesn't work on my Oliver. Again, is this common, and is it difficult and expensive to fix?

Ok, your PTO has a brake on it, and it sounds like it is simply out of adjustment. Most Olivers tend to PTO drift because you need to adjust them often and most people do not. At the base of your PTO lever there is a turnbuckle that runs the brake that goes into the rear end of your tractor. You need to take the pin out and rotate the turnbuckle one turn at a time until you can feel the brake engauge and the PTO stops. If you turn it the wrong way it will get worse in a hurry so you will know. Also you should feel a noticable click as you put the PTO in gear and it goes over the center. If you do not your PTO clutch may be worn or out of adjustment. Try adjusting the brake first and see what happens.

Also all Olivers will freewheel down hills in low range, that is the way they are designed, go down hills in high range only.

Doesnt sound like you have big problems, just try some adjustments first, then you can go from there. You really should get an operators manuel for that tractor too, that will help you a lot. You can also get an IT manuel that will help you with repairs too. You can find some on e-bay or you can call the Floyd Co historical building in Charles City and they will sell you a reprint of the origional manuels.
