Shep I was reading your reponse below about the 5.9 conversion and an instruction manual. I do have a manual that was with the kit that I installed about ten years ago. It wasn't much to speak of but did give some deminsions and drawings of how to cut the frame. We got the kit from the Cummins dealer here in central IN. The frame mounts were the most important part of the kit. There were several things they sent that did not work quite right or at all. I made a list at the time of the things that were not right or needed to be improved and gave it to the rep that was working with us, but I think thats as far as it went. I'm sure I still have that list and manual, I'll dig it up and try to post. I also have a folder I got from the Cummins display at the farm show that had a 55 series on the cover. I know you have done 2 or 3 conversions and I have just done the one, but I don't think cutting the frame was any harder than it would be to find an 1850 frame and switch it. Just my 2 cents. WB.

Guys, I need to make just one smart remark on this subject. ONLY if all else fails do you use the instructions. HA! HA!

I really think someone should put togeather some kind of manuel for this type of conversion sometime. There seems to be enough interest in these conversions and everyone is doing them a little different. I have never seen any books or manuels or anything on this other than the drawing my mechanic gave me on cutting out the frame.

I have always made all my own engine mounts and have always been able to use the 1850 frame, and never had too much trouble finding them. I am now attempting a 1655 and am having to cut the frame, and I am not liking it. I also am going to attempt to not cut the bottom out of the tub and have an oil pan made from the top of the Cummins pan and the bottom of the Waukesha pan and make it fit in the existing hole. We will see if that works or not....

I guess the thing is you learn more about how to put these engines in every time you do them. I will never put as many in as Merlin has but for someone who just needs to do one conversion for thier own tractor it would be a lot easier if they could use all the things that have been learned by others. I would love to see any books or instructions you have found, maybe there are things I can do better :-)

Shep I don't know how you are cutting out your mounts but I used a drill with about a 5/16" bit and drilled a series of holes where I wanted to remove and then broke it out with a hand sledge. Then smoothed it up with a body grinder. I forgot to look in my tool box today for the instructions for the conversion, I will try and remember tommorow. I think something put together with instructions, part numbers and helpful hints would be pretty cool. Input from several different people would cover many different situations and shortcuts needed for the conversion. WB.

That is exactly the way I am busting out the mounts. I am drilling holes about 1/4 inch apart down the edge of the mounts and useing a chisel and a BIG Hammer to bust them out and then grinding them smooth. So far I have almost gotten two mounts out and ground and have gone through 4 drill bits and 3 grinder blades. Its getting there but it is slow work. I think I would rather replace the frames if I could.

Hey Fellas -
While I do not own an 1850 I do have some free time. I just got promoted to a non-traveling position and will have more time on my hands.

I can assemble something and send back out for y'alls review, edit and clarification. Drop me a line if any interest then we can work out details.

Do you have a publisher in mind for when we get this book done???

I can see it now, as a best seller in the winders of all the bookstores. You can sit by the roaring fire in the evening and read about Cummins/Oliver conversions. Well, I would anyway, thats why my wife thinks Im crazy....

Congrats on the promotion ShepFL

Have print shop will print.
My 1850 has the Perkins but Shep says they will go sooner or later soooo where's the BOOK?
I agree with ShepFL, I'd sit around and read about Olivers all night. It would be great to have some idea where to start instead of having to start from zero.

I have access to many tools for editing. I would consider publishing it in ADOBE format when complete. Perhaps we can have Kim publish it from this site. I would also suggest technical review from some of the more experienced BIG OLLIE fellas.

Oh yea, pls note that all requestors would be required to pay $5 for each copy so we can all replenish our tractor funds :) and I subsidize my own big Ollie fund!!

ShepFL running around with a super 55 with a 3.9L cummins bolted into it. Could you imagine a super 55 running a silage blower, or pulling a colter chisel. LOL That would be wild. We, got 100HP here but it only weighs 3000#. That would turn some heads at a tractor show.
