Oliver 550 Steering Problem

Symptom was loss of steering to the left and steering shaft 'unscrewing' to pop out of the tube! Disassembled steering box to find the top bearing had been crushed. Replaced the bearing, drove it around and it happened again. What is the procedure for correctly seating the top bearing and positioning the worm gear and wheels. Is there any other part to stop the upward movemnt of the steering shaft besides the top bearing? Thanks for any info.

The steering shaft is held in place by 2 bearings 1 at the bottom and 1 at the top. Both have outer races pressed in, the inner race is ground on the ends of the shaft and the only adjustment for the end play is by the use of shims. The upper race is pressed into the shaft outer tube that bolts to the unit. After the shaft is adjusted the gears are aligned by turning the shaft to center [about 2 1/2 turns] the front gear is centered and slid in, the rear gear[teeth one side] is centered and slid in, I believe the rear has an arrow for alignment. I recently rebuilt one that had been used w/loader, the lower bearings were destroyed an the upper replaced with a piece of hard plastic, this one raised 1/2 in before any thing started to move. good luck
