Can someone please tell me how the Oliver hydro-power transmission operates including its advantages, dependibility and how it compares to similar trans. of other makes, ie Deere etc.

The HydraPower Drive was a two speed unit and was built in the Oliver Factory in Charles City. The Over/Under Hydraul unit was a three speed and was also built by Oliver in Charles City. Only the Reverse-O-Torc was built by Funk an independent company at that time, now owned by John Deere. The two speed had one clutch that was engaged in direct drive, and a sprage clutch that transmitted power in low range and was free wheeling in direct drive. The three speed had two clutches and one sprage clutch. Clutches are used for direct and over drives, all clutches are engaged by self contained hydraulic system. The John Deere two speed Hi/Lo has a clutch and a brake that are hydraulic engaged. Depending on model, the brake is either underdrive or overdrive. Oliver introduced the HydraPower Drive in 1962 & the Over/Under Hydraul shift in 1967. Deere did not have the two speed untill the 30 series for 1973 models.

It doesn't free wheel in direct drive. It free wheels in the low range.

You're talking about the whole tractor, Mr. Starr's talking about the sprage clutch inside the hydropower - two very different things.

After reading the post again, I see what he means. If anyone every rebuids their hydra-power, replace the sprag clutch too. It is over $200, but after this many years, it is wore pretty good.

I only have experince with oliver which is a two or 3 speed with a tuff 6 speed trans.One good point is they will run in low without any hydrolic preasure.Deere now owns the company that made the oliver(funk)power shift units so they must have thought they where good.
