Oh Well, I guess it could be worse!!

I got my 1850 out about a month and a half ago to chisel plow the garden. After I got started the tractor quit. Found the gas line clogged , so I blew it out. Did it again, so I drained the tank (quick fix). Then I was back at it and the remote hydraulics quit (see my other post).So I parked it in front of my shop to work on the Hydraulics , and I went out a day or two later to move it so I could get something else in the shop and FLAT TIRE!!! Oh well , I can patch that right? WRONG!!! It was split right down the middle!So , I saved my pennies and dimes and bought a new front tire.Ready to roll!! Wrong!! Battery decided to go dead! So, I got the battery out of the truck ( it's new ), and put it in . Tactor just grunts. Cleaned all the connections and Nope that wasn't it. Found a rusty connection on the starter solenoid and a crack in the starter solenoid. So, I changed it. I cranked it over before I put it back and it spun that starter good. Im a genius ! Wrong!! Bolted the starter back to the bell housing and it still just grunts or barely turns over. I'm ready to put a bullet through radiator and put it out of it's misery!!!

Last year my Super 55 lost the starter, alternator and points, all at the same time! I assume the starter shorted out and caused all this, but with round trip from my parts sources to the tractor being 160 miles, I was one unhappy camper! The work certainly backs up for your rig when its sitting for weeks on end!

However, it got running, worked its little heart out for me, and then this spring.... TADA, lit right up. Life is sweet with Olivers!

Just kidding fellas. Scott and ShepVA - tell ya what. Since I have my shop done and contractor is building house I may have some free time on my hands. I will come up with my trailer and haul those old 1850's to my place here in FL.

If after the summer they are not functional I have a MF 50c backhoe I will dig a big hole and bury them. This will benefit us all in 4 ways!!

1. I will remove broken equipment from your place and your better halves will be pleased.

2. No transportation costs to you thus more $$ for other tractor activities.

3. I will have a summer project all for the cost of hauling them to FL.

4. My 550 will have some stable mates of the same breed.

Seriously though, best of luck getting those rigs operational again. I have been there myself but on a smaller scale. I have a little AC D10 that continues to give me fits. Maybe I throw the D10 in as trade against both 1850s? Best of Luck!

Right now there is a lot of things worth more than that tractor in my mind. But I will get it fixed and running again here soon. And BTW my 1850 has a 160Hp 6BT Cummins engine in it, so when she is running correctly it should be worth a little more. Check it out.

Yeah Scott, that is the way it goes sometimes. I am going through a simular chain of events with my 1850 at the moment. Mine kinda went like this. I got it out this spring and the three speed started making noise, then it started leaking. No problem I will pull it out and have it rebuilt, so the engine comes out and the three speed goes to the agco dealer. I get it back in about a week and put it all back togeather, fired it up and it still leaks. So Im taking it all out again and the pto shaft will not come out after hours of messing with it. I open up the transmission cover to see if i can help it any, no luck. Ok, its hitting on the pto so I will take the pto out and see if I can pull the shaft. So I take the pto unit out but it is hitting the hitch and will not slide out with the shaft still in it. So I take the hitch off and the pto comes out and then the shaft slides out, and it all this mess I have managed to bend the shaft. Ok ok no problem, I take the engine out and the three speed back to the agco dealer, Im not happy. I get it back and put it all back togeather with a new pto shaft, fired it up and went to the field and the direct drive is not working... By this point I am very upset and called the dealer, told him he is getting the entire tractor to fix this time for free. Well at least I can run the tractor in two ranges for a while-- wrong.. The altinator nut comes loose and breaks two of the fins and throws the belt. So I have the altinator fixed and went back to the field yesterday, now the radiator springs a leak..... Arrrgggghhhhh hhh Can we put these two 1850's in a hole togeather Scott????? I have not been able to use my 1850 all spring because it has been sitting in the shop for the last month and a half.

Shep, The hole solution sounds good to me . My 1850 has a Hiniker cab , so make the hole a little deeper! I sure do miss the 1900 with the Detroit I use to have!

Take comfort in the fact that your recitation of the "comedy of errors" (as my mother used to put it) lets the rest of us know that it happens to everyone from time to time. It is strange how a tractor will go along fine on all fronts for years, then suddenly, everything goes wrong at once, and then the problems compound each other. Mom also used to say, "This, too, shall pass". She was a bright lady- I miss her.

Yeah Mike, it seems like it cycles around. We run and operate 10 tractors on our farm and it seems like they will run for a long time and then all of the sudden one will just "live" in the shop for a whole period of time. Then you will get it all fixed and it will run a few more years before you have to mess with it again. I have just had two of my Oliver have MAJOR problems this spring and it has left me a little short handed in the tractor department, and I have gotten a little frustrated. Course I know everyone goes through it. But as your mother so wisley said, this too shall pass and everything will work again. She sounded like a good person. Thanks for your help.
