Front Ball joint removal on Super 55

I have a 1955 Super 55 that I need to replace the front ball joints on. I have tried and can't get them to come off. It looks like the new ones have a tapered shaft. Do I need some sort of heavy tool to do this?

Remove the cotter pin. Spin the nut off part way. Some times an air wrench is best for this. Have someone pry the tie rod end away from the nut side so as to pry it off. I would suggest a long bar like 5 or 6 feet. Now hit the steering arm solidly with a large hammer very close to the point where the tie rod end is through the steering arm. Don't hit the nut. It should pop loose with a couple of good hits. Spin off the nut the rest of the way.
Or you could buy a pickle fork.

I use the standard ball joint separating tool a slotted tapered wedge costing $3-$5. It's driven with hammer and pops them apart. Sometimes called "pickle fork".
