I just overhauled a 1950 88 gas and it cranks slowly. I used an original set of pistons and sleeves that an AGCO dealer had. Are you supposed to hone these to size? I didn't think it was necessary since the pistons were in the sleeve when i took them out of the box. What could be causing it to crank slowly?

Take the starter apart worn bushings will cause the armature to drag on the field poles. Also if there is no center support bushing any brush not making contact will cause the starter to have low torque. Been there myself but I have the tools to do the fix. Dragging armature also causes hi current drain. Good luck

Check your battery ground connection. If it is not routed to the engine block purchase a longer cable.

I had this problem on my 88 and 66. New battery, & new cables didn't work. Just needed a tune-up on the starter. The bushings are probably worn. Take it in and have new bushings and brushes put in and that should solve your problem. Starter needs to be in top shape to turn over that new overhaul.

Does it crank slowly when the spark plugs are removed? If yes than perhaps an electrical problem, or worse a mechanical problem with the crank etc. Does it crank slowly when they are installed? Does it backfire through the exhaust or intake? If yes then I would make sure the ignition timing is correct.
Can you crank it by hand with the plugs removed?

Yes it does crank slowly when the plugs are removed. Where would I start to diagnose the electrical system? I have been unable to get it started yet. Its a 6 volt system that uses an 8 volt battery for more voltage.
I can crank it by hand with the plugs removed.

Tim , I agree with larry. I'll bet it's electrical. I do have one question for you. How did it turn over before? My uncle had an Oliver "88" with a gear reduction on the starter motor. It always turned over slow. Do you have a gear reduction on yours? If not , I would say it is electrical.

I'm not sure what a gear reduction would look like. How would I tell if it does?

Hi Tim , The gear reduction went between the starter motor and the cone shaped casting wich the starter drive can be seen. If I remember right , it was approx: 1 to 1-1/2" long , which made the total length of the starter that much longer. The casting looked like it had off set gears in it , which it probably did.

You are not supposed to hone those cylinders, just install with out removeing the pistons. Most likely you have an electrical problem. You could squirt some oil in the cylinders and pull it around for awhile if you want to be sure its loose.
