My family farms with 13 Oliver tractors (1550-1950)and do our own repairs but seem to have gotten stumped by this one. We have had chronic problems with the hydrualics getting hot and a pump that seemed a little noisy on this 1855 and recently it got real noisy, vibrates, and gets real hot. The one thing that seems to help is to be using one of the remotes, when a remote is moved from the center position to raise or lower a hyd. cylinder, the noise and vibration goes away. As a trouble shooting measure, we made a short hose that looped the two lines on one of the remotes when it is moved from the neutral position. This seems to take care of the problem but we are not sure what that means. We are guessing there is a valve malfunctioning so that when both remotes are in the neutral position the oil has no place to go but we aren't sure. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Two years ago my 120 hyd oil got hot, engine under load all the time, same style pump as 1855.
The piston under the valve plate on the end of the pump housing, that pushes against the piston rod that goes into the compensator valve had a hole worn in it. Hope this isn't your problem. The piston and rod come as a set, about $250. Good luck!

We just have 1850's, but I had a similar situation. My pump made a lot of noise and stuff too. As we got to looking, the three point hitch lever wasn't adjusted properly. The arms were all the way up when the lever was only 3/4's they way up. If I pushed the lever all the way up, the noise would start. So, needless to say, I adjusted everything properly. I don't know if this will do you any good, but I thought I would mention it anyway.

The 1850 has open center hydraulics, and the 1855 is closed center.

Well the compensator valve is not working, its the small thing on the end of the pump held on with 4 small bolts.Take it off (oil is going to run out)and see if its stuck or plugged. If you find metal particals then you have a bad pump, repair or better yet replace.

Hmmmmm mmmmm,..... Sounds like the pump is working overtime making the oil hot and the vibration,...

You may want to check the relief valve? Maybe it is set too low and the oil keeps circulating to the tank.

Since it is a Closed system, it should build to pressure and then the squash plate tilts to nothing so it won't pump any or only a little till pressure drops.

Once the pressure starts to drop, the plate tilts again to match flow and keep up pressure.

I will ask around and if I find out anything for sure, I will post more.

The O Ring idea could be another problem that is causing this too,... At least a few of us have diffrent ideas that may be able to help you out.

Well, I am guessing you got one little o-ring or something not doing its job anymore. It always seems to be some little part to make a fix. With the closed center hydraulics on this model, your oil should get up to pressure and quit pumping, but its not, because you said its getting really hot. Hmm, I'll let someone else take a swing at it too, but I bet its a little o ring in the valve yet, thats the way it always goes. Best of luck:)

2 cents here is to pressure test the system and ensure the relief valve is functioning properly. These early closed center systems were notorious for weak relief valve springs which would bypass oil and not allow the pump to destroke, or in other words, reach the high pressure standby setting, thus you are constantly pumping oil over relief. All are good suggestions too and the compensator valve could also certainly be to blame. Good luck!
