A man gave me a good looking 1250 Oliver because it had a bad starter. I found a used starter and the tractor cranks over real good, but it doesn't have any fire. The points were shot, so I put in a new set and still no fire. I also put new plugs in it, new wires, new condenser. I cleaned the contacts on the cap and rotor, and see no cracks in the cap. Still no fire. Anybody have any ideas??

I would use a multimeter to check the coil. Then check all of the ground connections.

I tried a different coil last night, so I will check my ground connections next. Thanks, Andy

Andy, this is probably something you already checked, but is juice getting to the coil? Maybe the switch?

I will check for power at the coil tonight. I am thinking this may be the trouble. I was told if this is happening that I can run a hot wire off the battery to the coil to see if I get fire. Is this right? Thanks, Andy

That will work, but don't leave it hooked up too long. can burn the coil up. is this 6 0r 12 volt? If 12, there may be a resistor in the wire between the coil and the switch. this resistor is suppose to reduce the voltage/current to the coil. If you run direct 12 volts to this type of coil, they don't last long.

Actually it is a 24 volt system. I don't know why it is 24 volts it is only a 35 horse tractor, but that is how they were made. There is power at the coil. I turned the switch on and put a test light on the side of the coil that the wire from the switch goes to and it lit up the test light. I was told that if the coil is working that you can put the test light on the other side of the coil and it will flash every time the engine cranks over. Is this right? I tried this and nothing happens, so I figure if this is right the coil isn't any good. Thanks, Andy

andy,

the second side of the coil will blink your timing light only if the following 3 are good.

1) coil 2) the points are opening and closing (this is what makes the blink) 3) the condesonor is good

so don't toss the coil too soon

You can use your OHM meter to test the coil for continuity also. should be 4 to 7 ohms resitence in the secondary(big wire to the distributor) and alomost none in the primary(small wire to the points) Also check the coil to see if the two sets of windings are shorted together by doing a continuity check between the primary and secondary coils. If these all check out, the coil could still be bad under load.
