Could a S55 move a container?

Hey all! I'm having a 20' container delivered to an out of the way piece of land to use as a tool shed. We're talking about the kind you see on big ships. These things weigh a little over 5,000 lbs. If I needed to, do you think a Super 55 gasser could nudge or pull it around a little? Thanks

I think it would have it's work cut out for it.
The short answer is "maybe" on concrete and probably not on anything else. Use logs or pipes as rollers under the container and then you could probably do it. As you roll off the pipes or logs bring them around to the front and thus keep going.
At Nebraska, the 55 tested out with a maximum drawbar pull of 3539 lbs ballasted to 5501 lbs. The long answer per my long lost high school physics is as follows: Assuming the coefficient of friction between the container steel and a concrete surface is 0.3, the required force would theoretically be 0.3 x 5000 lbs or 1500 lbs, so therefore it could do it on concrete. But if you have it on dirt the coefficient of friction for the container would be close to 1, and that for the tire rubber on dirt would be less than that so you would be out of luck unless you use something to make it move easier.

glad it helped. Every now and then you get a tractor that does not read the book and does something it is not supposed to be able to do, though. Keep ya guessing.

A heavy fork lift would move it. However, with pipes as mentioned you could move it, with a chain hooked up to the lower front posts. I had a new 20 foot container delivered to my small farm in PA, and was happy with it. There are no permits, and no taxes, and it is instant and overbuilt. I paid 2700 delivered, it is new. In the future, I may put a shed roof off of the side. Property taxes went up 33 percent over the last year in PA due to school construction, but this does not effect my container. You get a lot of bang for the buck with one of these containers. If it comes on a roll back truck, he can just about put it down exactly anywhere that you want it. Good Luck.
