Would a 1550 head on a 77 give it more horsepower? I don't understand why you would put one on a 77, even if it did interchange. Someone please explain.

The 1550 head should have higher compression. The most increase in power would come from a 1555 head which has larger 88 valves in it.

I assume that I will have to find a junk 1555 or 1550 to make this work? Or can you get a new one from a dealer? What has to be added with the head to make it work. Manifold, carb? etc...

Actually, the most cost effective way to do it might be to use your 77 head, shave it to gain compression, and have the machine shop grind out for 880 valves and seats. Poof. More compression and better airflow. To use this, though, you'll want more carb than the 77 provides. A 1600 carb or 1550 makes a nice fit and has bigger jets than the old 77 carb. Did this on one last year and head work was about $350 all told plus the carb. Hope you plan to increase the bore on the old 77 too; makes lots more power with a 3 3/4" bore from a 770 sleeve and piston set.

Best Regards,

I plan to buy a rebuild kit. If I buy one for a 770, will it fit the 77. I suppose I need to buy the main and conn. rod bearings seperate?

Right you are. The rod journals are smaller on the 77 than on a Super 77 or 770 so you'll want to buy sleeves and pistons for a 770 and bearings for a 77. Piston pin diameter remained the same so you can still use your 77 rods. Sure makes a big difference in a stock 77!

Good luck and have fun!
