Oliver 70 runs rough w/ no load

I have a 1940 Oliver 70 that I am beginning to pull with. The muffler was bad, along with the ends, so I replaced it with dual pipes. It has always run rough at idle and at higher RPM's without a load, but when it's pulling, it smooths right out and runs perfect. What could cause this? It has new copper wires, cap and rotor. Also a new carb. Could this be carbon buildup? It sat for a few years and smoked quite a bit when I first got it. The smoke gas since gone away (stuck rings).
Could it be there is no back pressure from the dual pipes. I have driven other 70's with dual pipes that were smoother.

Scott, I had a 1941 Farmall A that did the same thing. It didn't like unleaded gas. I put an additive in the gas like Instead O Lead. Helped some but didn't completely cure it. Couldn't find anything else wrong with it. sold it and bought an Oliver 550. Good Luck.

Scott, Runs rough covers a lot of ground. Does it miss on some cylinders? or does it stumble and sound like its going to stall, or does it hunt? RPM up and down? John

The rpm does hunt at idle, have already checked for intake leaks, has none. It almost sounds like it is missing and wanting to stall, but not a dead skip. Just sounds ratty.

try restricting the exaust temporally and see if this makes a difference. a 70 will also hunt when it is getting too much gas but run fine under load. Almost like it has a cam. It is also possible that a large flake of rust is cloging part of the manifold. If all else fails check the ignition, if the dist. drive or mag gears are real worn they can drift at idle but run tite under load. Hopefully you get some other ideas from the rest of the gang who are a lot better at this than me. John
