Jeez, sounds like one of the little Deere boys is pretty sensitive. FYI, Oliver did indeed make their own engines, and what engines they were. The pulling season starts here in under a month and I can't wait to bury the 4020s with my 1950-T. Man I love summer.

Hey, anyone get Antique Power magazine? Check out page 70 in the classified ads section and feast your eyes on a beautifully restored '72 1955 with the Heritage Special paint scheme. My Dad had told me engines had a lot to do with Olivers demise, in a round about way. They were selling so well in the late 60's, so they built a state of the art engine plant in Coldwater OH, at a cost of something like $50 mil. (which was alot back then) When the plant was almost done, the union went on strike and Oliver never recovered. Shortly after, they sold out to White Motor, and no engine was ever built there.

Anybody care to elaborate on this?

They sold the engine plant to Massey Ferguson. Read "The Tractor Builders" John Culberson gives a COMPLETE history on Oliver, and its a great read!

FYI: Massey Ferguson owned Perkins engines (Cat owns that engine division now), GM made the 2 cycle Detroit engines used in higher hp Ollies, and Waukesha made their own engines as well, but a pure Waukesha engine was not used in the Olivers. Oliver and Waukesha Motors had a joint venture, in which Oliver designed and engineered engine models. These engines were then jointly manufactured by Oliver and Waukesha, with Oliver making the block, head, oil pan, valve cover, manifolds, water pumps, etc, and Waukesha making and installing the crankshafts, pistons, sleeves, valve train parts, etc. (the internals). But the engine was of Oliver design. Hope this clears things up.

Since you are too chicken to reveal your identity, allow me to add to the excellent posts concerning Oliver engines. No, Oliver did not own Waudesha, Perkins, or Gm Diesel. But neither did Deere own Continental, GM Diesel, Hercules, or Wisconsin!! Guess you never owned an LA, a Deere combine or anthing else made by Deere and powered by an outsourced engine. All manufacturers did it. Get over it. Ignorant morons like you are laughable. My two cents.....Greg

Yes! I do own a John Deere Combine. It's a 55 with a John Deere 217 power unit. I also own a 520 620 1520 4020 F145H plow,35 forage harvester,45 loader, 47 loader, 1240 platelss planter, R spreader, #5 mower, 1-B corn sheller,LUC power unit, TH224 8ft spring tooth, THC328 10ft spring tooth, TH448H 16ft spring tooth, and a 876 walking plow.

I also have lots of John Deere literature, and books, Old and New.
