Oliver 550 serial number

I can't find the serial number on my new 550 is there any way I can determine the year by the number cast in the engine block?

You should have three rows of characters cast as raised letters and numbers on the LH side of the crankcase. As an example, my engine has: 180 220-G 1LB-100 B 1068 Top row Waukesha part number, middle row Oliver part number, bottom cast date: October, 6,1958. Remember that the crankcase and cylinder heads were cast in Charles City and some machine work performed, then sent to Waukesha, Wisconsin for assembly into a complete engine, then shipped back to Charles City for installation in a tractor. The above engine is in a 1959 production tractor. The part number 1LB-100-B is what is known as a prime part, in other words a bare crankcase. The part number that the dealer ordered was 1LBS-100-B, the "S" indicates an assembly including other parts such as main bearing caps, camshaft bushing and etc.

I doubt you would find something based on casting on block. Some of the other fellas BA Starr and the like should be able to.

My 550 did not have s/n tag, but it was stamped on the RH side of engine on vertical boss below generator. Check there. HTH
