I've got an Avery A that I think has the same braking system as the General GG from which it evolved, that is the one with the hand-brake levers. My Avery manual must be from a later model which shows two brake shoes and removeable access plates both at the top and at the bottom of the brake drum housing around the rear axle. It also shoes foot brakes. well at least they're not hand levers (I'm assuming foot brakes). My tractor has a single band surrounding the drum (not two shoes) and only an access plate from above (none below). Once I get all the brake hardware off from the top, how do I remove the brake band? Is the whole thing just pulled out from around the drum? And is it quite a task getting a relined brake band back in (if it's removed as I'm guessing)? I'd appreciate some direction and advice on how to go about this.

Alberta Mike, When I restored my General, I had my axles out so the brake bands were a piece of cake. So I checked my General manual for you, and it says you can remove the bands up through the cover plate. Jack up that side of the tractor, and while pulling on the front end of the band, rotate the tire forward. It says this will rotate the band out from around the drum without distorting the bend. Reassembly is the reverse of removal.
