I have not heard of any issues with them. I run an Oliver 550 Dsl. and it is a WORKHORSE! It is also EXTREMELY thrifty on fuel. Keep your filters changed and should not be an issue IMO. I cannot speak to the 550 Gas as no experience. I wish I had a 2nd Dsl. to to match this one - running or not!!

Probably the best all around utility tractor made, good short turning radius, easy on fuel, simple to work on. Spare parts are sometimes hard to come by. Things to check for are std. things like general condition of rig, water in oil, tires etc. Archives or articles on this site has a pretty good checklist. Also check front spindles if it has a loader or welding on front hubs (farm repair due to loader stress), test rig under a load, check PTO engage/disengage, drawbar is a major plus as is remote hydraulics (Christmas wish list).

I know the 310 Waukasha's have a bad reputation for coming apart. Poor design of wrist pins if memory serves me. These are generally found in the big Ollies, 1800, 1850, 1900 etc. A big Ollie is on the Christmas list - when is anyone's guess.

I must say- I'm rather impressed that you got a smaller tracter like that buried all the way to the axles. I own a 165 massey, But I never got her that stuck.(massey had the locking differential which comes in VERY usefull) I also have a 2 larger Olivers, a 1600 and 1755, and I have gotten the 1755 stuck a few times, but it has a loader so it can help pull itself out a little.

What years were the 550's made? I saw one in an ad today and have been trying to call about it. The ad says gas engine, live pto, no mention of PS.

What dealers have parts for the Olivers these days?

Oliver is now AGCO. As someone else said, parts are expensive but available (for the most part). Most everyone with old tractors these days tries to find parts everywhere else first, with dealer as last resort. Bearings can be had at bearing suppliers, electrical and tuneup through NAPA, etc.

The Oliver 550 model was made from 1960 to about 1970. It is still a very good general purpose utility tractor. Parts are expensive but still cheaper than buying a whole new machine.

Actually, 550s took over from the Super 55 in
1958, and continued until ~ 1975, and I think it
went longer than that as a White 2-44. Prior to the
1958 550, was the Super 55 beginning in 1954.
