880 starting problems

I have a 880 rowcrop standard diesel with fresh engine rebuild. Hard starter!!!
I'm using a single 12 volt battery. After preheating so it will start, don't have enough batt. power left to spin engine fast enough to start. Would a two 6 volt batt setup be a better? How about two 12 volts? What options do I have to improve this situation. I see in some of these discusson pages, this seems to be a inherent problem with this particuler model. Any help or comments would be appreciated. jimg

Thanks Guys I'll try the two battery thing already had new heavy batt cables made at a truck dealership, only about 50 hrs. on tractor since complete restoration, big....bucks. Maybe get better as it gets broken in more???? Thanks again jimg centwis

calls for 2 - 6 volts came that way from factory. must all ways have good batteries.+ gererator must be chargeing good all the time. i got one starts fine

Either option will help. You could also use heavier cables. Welding cables make the best starter cables. They have more and finer conductors and since the current tends to flow along the outside of the conductor more current is carried.

Provided you have a good starter two 6v wired in series or two 12v wired paralel (spelling?) will work.

How well does it run when it is running? Was it timed right when it was put together? Have you taken apart the starter? Are the starter bushings good?

These are just a few things to check if you are still having problems. I had a starter on a Cockshutt one time that spun over but took way too much battery power.
