Oliver 70 engine troubles

When starting my 70 with the hand crank, the motor seems to seize up every half revolution. You have to literaly stand on it to break it free. It seems to be worse when it is warm. Take the plugs out and it still does it, but once you break it free, it turns easy, and smooth for as many revs as you crank it. Stop turning it, and it binds right up. Once I discovered this, I have not dared run the tractor for very long. It is a 1938 model with five gear engine. When it is running, it runs very good, with no sounds that would cause for alarm, and no smoke. The tractor had been shedded for many years with very little use. Any advise on this matter would be much appreciated. Thanks, Esev

do the easy stuff first check the valves and push rods for a sticky valve or bent push rod. next check the idler gear bushings for wear in the 5 gear its possible for one of the idler gears to ride correctly while in motion but drop out of position and bind when at rest.does this happen in only one position like at top dead on no.2? if so the problem is most likely a valve, rod or broken ring. if it happens anywhere than its most likely a timeing gear or main bearing. I'm sure there are lots of other things it could be but theres a place to start.
