1755 Narrow front vs. wide front

I have found a 1755 for sale with 4160 hrs. overall, 1000 hrs. on the Cummins eng., new paint a year ago, with a narrow front. What is a good rebuildable wide front axle going for these days? Do you think the tractor is more valuable with the wide or narrow front? I have three narrow front tractors now and prefer a wide front on a tractor this size. Let me know what you think.

I just switched a 1600 from a narrow front to a wide front about two weeks ago and you are right, I like the tractor a lot better now. I dont know if the wide front actually adds more value to a trator, but I would say in most cases it is preferred. You can use a wide front off of alomst any 50 or 55 series Oliver to fit the 1755 and you can get them in good shape for around $1,000 with out trading your narrow front in. The narrow front is worth around $250 to trade toward the wide front.

The other option is to get an underslung or utility type front axle and that can be bought a lot cheaper, but it also rides a lot rougher. I would go with the standard row crop type wide front, and they are not that hard to change if you have a way to pick the front of the tractor up and SAFELY hold it while you change the fronts. Let me know if you have more questions, I have changed a few.

In my area , upstate South Carolina , wide front on 50 and 55 series is definately preferred and adds value to tractor . I changed an 1850 from a tricycle to a wide front about 2 years ago and it was not too much trouble . One problem with underslung wide front Shep did not mention , in addition to rough ride , is it tends to cause tires to cut ground more on turns than normal wide front . A friend has a 1650 which had an underslung when my friend bought the tractor . He uses the tractor a lot run a Vermeer Round Baler and cutting problem in hay fields was such that he changed to a normal wide front . A former Oliver mechanic in my area suggests that , if you are changing front ends , you should go ahead and change o rings in steering cylinder and quad ring at bottom of steering cylinder . When I changed out the front ends on the 1850 we took cast grill off so steering cylinder was exposed so it made it easy to change out o rings and quad ring .
