Oliver 1800 w/wakesha

I've been looking at an '62 Oliver 1800b with a wakesha(sp?) engine. The engine has a fresh rebuild on it. Is this a good dependable tractor/motor? He is asking 4500. The tires are about 75% front, 60% rear. The tin is straight. Responses appreciated.

Check behind starter for hole in block. Some jockeys are master of disguise, I found out the hard way. Cost me big money to repair properly.

Tim I have a 1800a diesel,and its my favorite.
Easy starting(if you use the intake heater),easy on fuel,pleasure to run.I had to rebuild the engine about 200 hrs. ago because a piston pin bushing went bad. But other than that, no problems.The price sounds about right. Good luck

Sounds alright, if not "freshly-painted" to cover
some repeated repair area. These 1800's were the first 'modern' big tractor in 1960, two years
later, the 806 would seem to have cloned the
1800, practically bolting on the flat top fenders. 18.4-34 were a good match, hydra-power
gave you twelve speeds. The grease zerk for the
clutch bearing was too convenient, thus surplus
oozed onto the disc, and the clutch slipping.
The series B & C were strong runners, early A's
lacked a transmission pump, causing wear plates to melt to gears, by 2K hours. A better tractor
overall, than the (excuse me!)4010 or 706/806.
And, Oliver was there first. Good luck.

I agree with chris. The wakesha is a poor starting engine and the 1800 does not have a lot of extra power. If you have any hills on your land you should look for a few more ponies. I have seen two or three home rebuilt 1800 and 1750's fly apart big time when pushed. Old timer told me that the wakesha's never had a big enough crankcase so you need to run a few of extra litres of oil and to run them below 2000 rpm. I have a 283 cu in. wakesha that needs rebuilding and I struggling with justifying the cost on a marginal engine.

Hold it a second Mick, internatonal did NOT copy olivers ideas in my opinion. I do not want to start a war over this, but i have driven an oliver and an 806, and in my opinion the 806 had the better engine, and transmission. I like the grease zerk for the clutch on the oliver, and the fact you can pull the engine out of it because of the chain behind the hydra unit. The engine is loud, and lousy starter, and under powered on the oliver in my opinion. It may have been good in its days, but it didnt take it long to be outdated
