I have a 1951 Oliver 77 that I use on the farm. It started knocking last summer so over the winter I decided to fix it. The flywheel was tight, and the coupling between the transmission and clutch was tight. The rods were worn some so I replaced them. Unfortunatley I didn't replace the mains. This cut down on the knock but didn't eliminate it. The other day I was pulling a fertilizer cart up a hill on the road in 6th. At the top of the hill the engine was only turning a few hundred rpm becuase of the load. Then it started knocking or grinding REAL bad so I shifted. After it got over the hill it was normal again. What is my problem? Main bearings? Thanks for you help.

Josh , I had a neighbor that farmed with an Oliver "880" tractor. He had a knocking noise in the engine. He had the engine rebuilt by a man who was well known for working on Olivers. After the rebuild job , they started the tractor up. It run nice , but still had the knock. They had spent many many hours trying to find out why the engine was knocking. Everything checked out good.They could not find anything wrong. The only thing they didn't touch on the engine was the timing gears. So , why not look in that area too. From what he told me , the timing gears had a lot of wear. They replaced the timing gears. The knock went away. The tractor ran great up until the man had a heart attack while putting up hay. His wife sold everything but the Oliver "880". That was his favorite tractor. Now it just sets out side in the weather. Last I knew , it wasn't for sale.

If your tractor has a belt pulley, did you check for the coupling bolts hitting the bottom of the pulley hsg. Coupling can turn free with clutch depressed / engine off but bolts can still clip the pulley at times. Use a mirror to get a look at the bottom of the hsg.

What does it sound like when you rev it. At what point does it make the noise. A rod usually doesn't knock on the way up. As the rpms fall it will start to chatter. Wrist pin doesn't make the noise at the same time.

Carbon build up? Sticking valve, lifter, bent push rod?

how bad are the sleeves wore. i think ya have a lot of piston slap. or wore wrist pins
