I also have an 1850 D that made a loud pop last year and started to pump lots of smoke out of the engine breather. I am looking at a full engine rebuild as no engine work was done on the engiine by original owner. (I am the second owner)
Before I commit to a engine rebuild I thought I would entertain repowering with a Cummins 5.9. I have read this possible but I am not sure its practicle given I do have a good 354 Block. Does anyone have some advise or comments?

Hi, Dave! Well, the Perkins is a good engine, and worthy of a rebuild. However, you also own one of the easier tractors to repower with a Cummins. Your tractor has the correct clutch housing (SAE #3) and the proper frame, which will require no machining. The engine mounts are readily available through Cummins. I have done many of these, and with very positive results. It will probably cost more to repower with the Cummins. Also, if you install a turbocharged Cummins, it will become necessary to shorten the fuel tank, which is not fun. A way around this is to install a steering pedestal and fuel tank off of a 1950-T. Lots to consider! Best wishes to you! Merlin

Why do you need to shorten the fuel tank???? I have never done that on the repowers that I have done. Are you having trouble with the fuel tank hitting the turbo on the Cummins???

Anyway, Alberta, if you can afford it and are going to "use" the tractor for work, it is well worth it to repower with the Cummins. The Perkins is a good engine and you can rebuild it for about half the cost of the Cummins, but I would still repower if you are workin it. I love my 1850 Cummins, just wish I had repowered it sooner.

My 2 cents

Hi, Shep! I decided to change my name on this board, because, after all, we ALL are tractor guys! Anyway, the 1850's that I have re-powered were done with brand new, industrial engines that use the high-mount turbo. The Dodge engines use a low-mount turbo, which does not interfere with the fuel tank. I also have experience installing the 6B into the 1650/1655/2-70 chassis. To do this, all of the engine mounts need to be removed. Ideally, you should manufacture a new oil pan that will drop into the existing pan hole in the frame. If you cut an opening in the frame for the stock Cummins pan, the frame will probably crack, since it is very thin just above the radius area (I speak from experience on this!). The 4B will work, too. Either engine will make a nice tractor even nicer! Best wishes to you! Merlin

Hey, On another topic. My 1650 is also getting very tired. Is there a suitable repower option for this model. The 1850 is such a better tractor than my 1650 I was considering using it for parts but I did replace the transmission input shaft a few years ago and I have a hydrapower box already waiting for the 1650. The only diesils I can think of in that might work would be the VW/Vovo units or something out of a Mercedes car. Any thoughts?

Naaaaa a, I just picked up a 1655 Oliver with a blown up engine and am planning on putting a 3.9L 4 cylinder Cummins into it. Cool concept, but I have seen a 1650 done this way. You have to talk to summit racing and get an electric fan because the engine is shorter, but with a nice charger on top the engine should be about 100hp on the flywheel and about 85hp or so out the rear. I have also seen 5.9L cummins with no turbo on them in 1650s that do the same thing. Little harder to put the cummins in the waukesha frams, but it still works... I will post more of the conversion with the 1655 when I get it home and get started.

Ok, You have me interested. I will start looking for an older wrecked Dodge truck with the first series Cummins engine for the repower. I am wondering what the higher rev limit on the Dodge truck engine will do to all of the stuff behind it or must you ensure to restrict engine revs below the Perkins 2100 RPM? My 2001 Dodge with the 24 valve engine will hit almost 3000 rpm at top speed. I never have driven the older engine trucks. What is the HP range for those older units?

I dont think the RPMS on the truck engine is that much higher, if it is you can slow it down at the fuel pump. My 1850 will turn about 2800 at full throddle and it does not bother the rest of the tractor, road speed is still about 20MPH and every thing else is about the same. I have my tractor set at 168HP on the flywheel which gives me a nice 145 out the PTO, and have had no problems, and you will not if you use your head with it. You should get about the same HP out of a truck engine. It will make a nice tractor, check out my site with the cummins converion I did.
