The 1650 diesil engine in my tractor was rebuilt about 5000 hours ago. It is now using lots of oil but has good oil pressure. It is getting very difficult to start and will only run if it is near freezing and above. There is no problem with cooling and the exhaust does not smell of unburned fuel. I was told that I can rehone the cylinders if I throw a few hand fulls of Comet or Ajax dry powder cleaner in the intake while running. Has any one tried or heard of this old mechanic trick?

That trick was used to seat NEW rings and only if they would not seat on their own. When everything is worn like yours it will only make things worse.Do NOT do this when a new sleeve, piston and rings are installed either.

I agree with Larry 100%. It is a little trick used only to seat new rings that have not seated on their own, and DO NOT try this on an old tired engine. It will only make matters worse. Good Luck I hope this helps Shadetree.
