550 Won't Shift

I let my friend drive my 550 around and somehow he got it so I couldn't shift it. We rocked the tractor back and forth and managed to find 5th and 2nd but something is seriously wrong with it, those are the only two gears I have. It also siezes the whole transmission when the gear shift lever is where neutral should be. Any ideas?

Okay, I'll bite: I am not brand loyal. My dad never owned a tractor, neither of my grandparents owned tractors so I am unattached. I have owned MM, my best friend is JD and I have three IHs. I love my Oliver over everything else so far!

First thing I would do is take the gearshift out and see if it jumped out of the shifter rails. I have had this happen on some others. Had them lock in gear and not do anything. Line up all the shift rails and reassemble. Might not be the problem but is the easiest and cheapest thing to check first.

Got it, but I had to pull the cover. Both rails were in gear. It was bound tight so I couldn't budge them from the shifter hole. Is there something I can do to prevent the shifter from jumping out again? Is there supposed to be a spacer above the ball sockets that the springs push against?

On the springs there is nothing else in the recess, the balls of the shifter rod X sit right into the center of the coil. Make sure that there is sufficient force to keep the shifter centered, if not replace te springs. Glad you got away without damage. Next time you let somebody drive give some lessons that double H pattern might have caused confusion and the resulting problem.

I pulled the shifter out but can't seem to budge the rails, at least with a screwdriver. How should they line up? They didn't look lined up so this might be my problem. The manual was useless!

Thr center rail is the hi-lo range,in neutral the center rail which has 1 cut. The side rails have 2 cuts each. In neutral[lo range] the center shaft will be at the rear as well as the rear recesses of the right and left shift rods. The opposite when in hi the center will be forward and the front recesses of the will be used. In neutral all recesses will be in line. I think that you have a problem with the shifting forks either broken or loose bolts which permit 2 gears to be engaged, the forks are held in place by 2 1/4" bolts[mine w/this problem gave me 2 lo's & 2 rev] The top cover must be removed to fix this. When you putthe tractor back together don't forget to replace the springs on both sides of the shift lever that keep the lever centered. 6 out of 8 that I have worked on were missing one or both which makes for sloppy shifting. Got the last 2 at Ace hdware. [just an after thought]

They are both there and in good shape, but thanks. I might put a dab of grease on top of the two ball ends since they are showing a little wear. The top of that shifter doesn't get any lube as far as I can tell.
