Ever since I asked people on their thoughts on the Oliver 1850 and 4020 JD, its been nothing but a mess on this message board. Different folks making jerky comments, others saying untrue remarks(both brands). Heck, now people are bickering over Kinze planters vs Deere planters. We need to end this all NOW! I'm sorry I even brought the subject up, because all anyone knows is what they think is right and they have to get their two cents in. Please end this all now people!

But you Oliver guys come up with just TWO things. Is this all you have?

I agree. Nobody is ever going to agree on this issue and it is just plugging up this board with JD fans acting like 3 year olds. Please stop the madness.

John Deere didn't have the best tractors , just the best dealerships. That was a first, to have a real dealerships, not just a ole Blacksmith's shop or Hardware store and sellin a mix of things.

Now you! know how it feels. We put up with this all the time on the John Deere board.
From Oliver,IH MM MF AC Case Gleaner and others. John Deere two cylinders didn't have this and didn't have that.John Deere this and John Deere that.
Well! John Deere has lots of industry first. Yes! on Two Cylinders. Lots of other tractors had Two Cylinders. IH Case Advance Rumely AND YOUR OWN (HART PARR) Yes! the Hart Parr H12-24 had Two Cylinders. It took John Deere to make the Two Cylinder better then any other company did. If you want a list of other industry first made by John Deere,I'll by happy to give it to you.

John Deere made the first plows but not the first at anything else. Oliver had six cylinder engines in 1937 while deere was still fooling around with 2 cylinders, and god didn't intend for a clutch to be operated by hand. Where was deere at with mechanical Front wheel drive. They must have gotten their tractor production line confused with their combines because a tractor should not have a mud hog on the front of it. Oliver had MFWA on their 50 series.

David Brown boasted about having pioneered direct injection in 1948. I never saw an Allis with direct injection dating back that far. I rebuilt a D17 diesel and it was indirect. I would be interested in more info on that subject.

He is talking about the diesel Allis crawlers like the KO and LO models I believe. They used a unique system of direct injection into a cup in the piston and then a spark plug ignited the fuel air mixture. Compression was only about 6.5 to 1 or so. I know of a stationary E Allis engine in the area set up this way.

Lots of tractors had a hand clutch. Hart Parr,Case IHC Titan 10-20,Advance Rumely,Massey Harris Pacemaker,Wallis Certified, Chase,Fairbanks Morse,Minneapolis Moline, and many more.
John Deere was not the last one to use a hand clutch,i think it was MM

The hand clutch was much better then the Allis Chalmers (hand brakes.)

John Deere gave to the world the steel plow in 1837
It was just an idea, but it worked from a broken sawmill blade John Deere forged the first steel plow that scoured successfully in the rich but sticky prairie soil.

That was at Grand Detour,Illinois

I went to the John Deere site and looked in the history, I'm not trying to be a pain here but this is a "cut and paste" directly from the site:

"The Story of John Deere
The story of John Deere, who developed the world's first commercially successful, self-scouring steel plow..." the way I'm looking at this is the STELL part, 'cause I'm quite sure there were other plows before hand.

I think he was indeed the first to add steel or something to the plow, but I really believe that he just perfected it. I'll look it up here to make sure. Not trying to knock either side...there's all shades of green on my farm! I'm just a history buff!!

That's why John Deere could use the Two Cylinder so long. They had it right long before they stopped using it. Oliver sure didn't perfect the 6 cylinder.

Hey you guys! Tell me what did Oliver have first other then live pto? Or was it Cockshutt that had live pto first. IH was the vary first with pto.

We all had something first! some of them good.some bad. Someone asked about Cat and John Deere and the track type tractor. Look at it this way! we all would be on steel, because AC used rubber tires first, should the rest of us still be on steel. Also Cat or John Deere don't make the track, they just use it.

Yes Gary , I'll back you on that one. You are correct. Then Oliver had it in late 1945. It was in the fields on proto oliver "88"s. After that , Cockshutt introduced live PTO in 1946.

In my surfing of all the ag tractor boards I find that almost without exception they are peopled by immature people, or mentally-challenged morons. In the first place, I think that troglodytes who have to be constantly putting down a brand of vehicle (be it car, truck or tractor!) that is other than the brand they are using/driving/owning have somehow missed class whenever God was passing out maturity certificates. A mature person likes his own preference in a brand, buys that brand, and does not constantly go around knocking other brands. I figure these mental giants who go around posting nonsensical things on boards are just snotty-nosed school kids who, thanks to there no longer being a military conscription, are reduced to haunting ag tractor forums and stirring up trouble and, shame on all you old geezers who let your chains be yanked by these young acephalous cretins!
