1850 charging problems

I am trying to get my 1850 to charge, and wondered if anyone can help. I had the alternator tested, and it is okay. I put on a new regulator that I bought at NAPA, and it won't charge. When I put a jumper wire from the battery to the "f" terminal, it charges like crazy. I am getting power to the regulator, but the voltage coming out is .3 volts less than what is going in. I can't figure out why this won't energize the fields. It is a solid state regulator. The only other thing that I have noticed is that the resistance of the old alternator field is 6.5 ohms, and the resistance of two new alternators is 5.0 ohms and 5.5 ohms. My ground is good for all components too. Anybody have a clue about what could be the problem?? By the way, I do not want to put a one wire alternator on it. I want to keep it as original as possible.

Make sure you are using the right regulator. The regulator for a car will not work on the 1850 as originally wired. NAPA can cross the Delco number and get you the right one. Email if you need the numbers.

I think that their book is wrong. I gave them the part number, and it crossed to a different regulator from what they gave me. The one they gave me is a 2 unit regulator, and the one that was on it was a 1 unit regulator. Another thing I observed was that the resistence between the "f" and "3" terminal ont the new one is 150,000 ohms. (WOW) The old one had 20 ohms between the same terminals. I think the new one they sold me is killing all the amperage, which makes it so there isn't enough to energize the fields. I guess I better just order one from AGCO.

Yeah, I know, but they had to order that one and it is 4 times more than the other one. I can one from Wells (VR 716) for 1/4 of the price of the NAPA VR140. I just didn't want to wait.

make sure there is continuity in the field wire from the alt. to the f terminal of the reg and that there is also batery voltage at the bat post on back of the alt. you've probably already checked but maybe. If that checks out the reg's that are sold today are junk and it was bad out of the box. hope this helps
