I took the generator off my oliver and replaced it with an alternator. I hooked it all up and I can't seem to get it hooked up right. I have to charge up the battery and take a spare with me when ever I go to a pull.. Does any one have a wiring diagram of a 1948 su 88 row crop. If any one can help feel free to email me at [email protected] Thanks JC

Hopefully you have an alt with a built in regulator and you threw away to old regulator.

There is a connector on the alt, (may be marked f for field) that has to have 12 volt to charge the field so the alternator can produce 12 volts. I think it needs to come from a switch so it will not run your battery down while it is in the barn.

JC i don't have a wiring diagram but it is quite simple to change over. what type of alt. do you have, single wire or 3 wire?

It is a single wire alternator. I have hooked and re hooked it up and cant get it to charge the battery. Thanks JC

I assume you have a delco Alternator. 1st thing. You MUST use negative ground! Second. connect the batt wire to the Gen wire at the old regulator location and discard the field wire. Third. put a jumper to the farthest pin on the regulator from the power wire. It uses so little power to run the regulator that it'll take months or years to run the battery down. Now it should work. If it doesn't you MAY have been unlucky enough to get an old regulator that has to have the idiot light connected to the remaining terminal in order to work. easist is change the regulator.
