The torque converter which was used in the 995 had several stages. This let the tractor go through a tough spot and the engine speed would stay the same.When the load lightened your speed would go back to match the gear you are in.

The 995 lugamatic was the deluxe version of the 990. They both use the same 371 Detroit diesel, but the 995 has a fluid drive torque converter in front of the transmission.

I had previously thought that the Lugmatic ended up being something akin to the IH hydro's- set the engine at optimum RPM, then vary the speed of the tractor with the hydro. But is that right? If it's just a torque converter in front of a conventional transmission, what's the advantage? Seems like it would be just another source of power loss. Someone in the know please comment.

Is the 995 lugomatic a hard tractor to come by and what would be a resonable price for one that is in good shape?
